The CLE

We invite you to join Locke Lord, Catholic Charities Houston Cabrini Center, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, and VECINA for this one hour presentation entitled “Refugee Crises: Then & Now.”

This CLE provides you with an overview of the law and policy surrounding refugees and asylum seekers in the United States. We will cover our nation’s historical treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, a rundown of asylum law, and talk about how lawyers can get involved assisting one of the most vulnerable groups of asylum seekers in our nation today: recent arrivals from Afghanistan.

1.0 Hours of CLE credit in Texas is pending.

The CLE will take place in person, with the option to live stream over Zoom.

The Need for Help

After years of U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, our country has officially withdrawn its presence.  Almost immediately, the Taliban overthrew the government and seized power, throwing the country into chaos. Many have died, and thousands more are being hunted, looking for a way to escape. Some have been fortunate enough to enter the United States, but most were only granted temporary “parole” status. They now need to apply for asylum to seek permanent status due to the persecution they would face if they were forced to return to Afghanistan.

As you can imagine, the demand for legal assistance far outweighs the supply of attorneys who are ready to help. At the end of the CLE, we’ll be talking about ways attorneys and firms can get involved to assist Afghan asylum seekers pro bono, and the mentorship and training we offer to make sure you have everything you need to competently and zealously represent your client.
