At VECINA, we have seen firsthand how the language of division and exclusion undermines the rights and dignity of immigrants. Last week, our Interim Executive Director, Alex Miller, was featured on Al Jazeera, addressing this issue head on. “A lot of Americans have fallen victim to a really tactical, politically motivated smear campaign against migrants that both unfairly associates migrants with criminality and insinuates that migrants do not contribute to the United States,” said Miller.
We know that immigrants contribute to our communities and to our economy and hope that this is a country that will focus on finding “commonsense ways to build pathways so that migrants are able to come here, lawfully…instead of spending billions of dollars, taxpayer dollars, to deport immigrants that really don’t impact the day-to-day life of American citizens,” as Miller put it.
We refuse to be paralyzed by fear. Instead, we are motivated by our enduring commitment to the immigrant families and individuals who have placed their trust in us. VECINA is pursuing and will continue to seek the commonsense solutions this country so desperately needs. In the face of mounting challenges, we are doubling down on our work to defend the rights of immigrants, to provide critical services, and to stand as a voice of solidarity.
Join us in the fight to ensure that immigrant communities continue to receive the protection, dignity, and respect they deserve.
