Monday August 28, 2023, Morning Session

In collaboration with ILSAA (Immigration Legal Services for Afghan Arrivals), VECINA is hosting re-parole clinics for Afghan newcomers in Austin, Texas.

Two years ago when the Taliban asserted control in Afghanistan, the U.S. government evacuated tens of thousands of Afghans at risk. When they arrived the vast majority of Afghan refugees arrived without permanent legal status, in a status called “parole,” which is valid for two years. Many of these individuals and families now need to apply for re-parole in order to extend their permission to live and work in the United States.

Volunteers at the clinic will assist members of our local Afghan newcomer community with their applications for re-parole, including tasks such as:

  1. Creating email addresses and online MyUSCIS accounts;
  2. Checking documents needed for the application;
  3. Filling out the re-parole application;
  4. Review and filing of the application.

Volunteers can sign up for a four hour block of time (morning or afternoon) on clinic days. You are welcome and encouraged to sign up for multiple sessions if you are able!

Requirements:

Technology: Each volunteer is expected to bring their own laptop. Once the session is complete, volunteers will be expected to clear their cache (i.e. “cookies”) from their laptop.

Legal Background: Volunteers are NOT required to have a background in immigration law, but MUST be a licensed attorney, active and in good standing.

Training: All volunteers will be expected to complete an approximately 1 hour online training prior to the day they are volunteering.
